Press Release Improper Bostonian March 2015

The latest destination on the North Shore is an oldie but goodie. A diamond in the rough tucked in an unassuming corner of Derby and Lafayette Street in Salem, is a cosmetic boutique with a cult following, Rouge. Rouge’s recent facelift would put a tear in the eye of even the most avid makeup skeptic. The new owner Alejandra Kough and her partner Mark have innovative and exciting plans to grow Rouge into the more sophisticated and worldly big sister of its former self.

Alejandra’s new formula for the store’s future is big. A cozy premier spa room is now available for the ultimate pampering. Customized facials and brow sculpting are offered including the exclusive and glamorous Caudalie facials provided by our trained estheticians. These facials are only available at select spas around the world, including the Park Plaza in New York City and the Vinotherapie Spa in Paris.

Caudalie is an effective skincare line that believes in luxurious treatments, and a greener planet. It is a family owned line born in the vineyards of the Chateau Smith Haut Lafitte and is popular among the everyday modern woman, skin professionals, and celebrities.

Although there are many changes, the award winning makeup services are here to stay. Professional artists are available to provide one-on-one lessons, applications for your big day or for suggestions on the perfect color or product for your skin. The makeup products range from top notch, cutting edge colors to skin soothing natural hues.

This iconic toy store for women (and men too!) has gotten even hotter, so come down to Rouge and meet our specialists, check out our cutting edge makeup products and our effective and luxurious skin care lines.  For more information, or to schedule your next facial or waxing, visit

Best of Boston 2009

After months of dining, shopping, and advice-seeking our way across the Hub, it’s here: your annual guide to the finest our city has to offer. North End to South Shore, East Boston to MetroWest. We made a lot of stops in our hunt for the finest of everything the Hub has to offer, an annual quest that we took in a whole new direction this year (see “How We Did It”. And now, 12 months, hundreds of miles, and about a gazillion calories later, our Best of Boston journey has finally ended. Yours, however, is just getting started

“Beauty junkies can spend years perfect-ing their primping arsenals. If you’d prefer to skip beta-testing your makeup bag, though, let Rouge makeup artists do the work for you.  Those who suffer from Overstimulation at Sephora will appreciate Rouge’s manageable inventory and elegant interior, while cosmoholics love the staff’s exhaustive knowledge…”

How Far Will You Go For Beauty? Posted on New Brahmin Blog July 2, 2008

If the looks from the street alone aren’t sweet enough to get you to step into ROUGE, then well, maybe you should reconnect with your girly side. Driving by, this place looks like a little piece of heaven and when you go inside, you realize it just may be. At the very least, I had stumbled upon a makeup lover’s paradise.

ROUGE hosts everything from your common favorites, like Nars and Paula Dorf to exclusive names like Australian-based Model Co (which I am writing an entirely separate post on because there are so many unbelievable products in their line that they don’t fit in just one).

As if having in house makeup artists isn’t enough, they also offer “Girls Night Out” parties, so bring your friends! I had the pleasure of meeting 2 of their resident artists (Marlo & Manda), as well as the owner (Ann Massey), and they could not have been friendlier or more helpful. They know their products!

Yes, Salem is a bit of a hike from Boston. And yes, I am also weary of the witches. But brave the commute and the monsters, and I promise you will not be disappointed.
